I'm worried about the fact that there's no A/C in John Jay.
I mean...isn't it gonna be ungodly hot in that dorm?

Honestly? Yes, it will be ungodly hot and you will sweat a lot unless you get some good fans, and even then it'll be ungodly hot in the corridors and bathrooms. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :p But fortunately, you've already missed most of the hot season. It'll be hot until about halfway through September or so, and maybe again in May, but it should be fine for most of the time you're living there.

It's really pretty sucky that Columbia doesn't allow window units in the undergrad dorms. In older buildings that don't have central air, you really do need them to survive summer in the city.

What about plain window fans (not A/C)? When I went to boarding school, everyone used those because none of the dorms had A/C.

Yes, people use those. I hate them because I like having my window open all the time, but you can have one.

As far as the heat, I thought it was bearable. Unpleasant, but one of the classic things about living in John Jay is that you're forced to leave your door open at the beginning of the year to get the crossbreeze going, and that's one reason that the whole everybody-having-singles thing isn't a problem socially.

Hundreds of other kids have done it before us and survived. It's been 103,104, etc. etc. here every day for the past two weeks. I'm sure the "heatwave" northerners complain about will feel like Christmas to me.

Still though, I plan on some good fans.

Well, I mean, I'm used to heat. It's been somewhere around 95-98 most of the summer here...but I'm also used to A/C. :P

We'll survive.

Over here in Hong Kong the humidity is always at like, 97%. So I'm not worried - but I'm still getting myself a fan. I love fans!
