Hello there- I am a GS student, starting next month, and I have a question: how long to professors wait to announce the texts they'll be using? I have checked the course listings, and the bookstore online, and there's no info yet. Do you usually get this info at the first class, and not before?

Is it ever acceptable to email the professor and ask for the info? Or will that just irritate them?

What do you do?

If this info makes a difference, the profs/classes are:
Philosophy & Feminism/Mercer
Intro to Women's & Gender Studies/Kessler-Harris and Tadiar
Musics of India & West Asia/Oakes
and University Writing, TBA.

Thanks!

I find it odd that we're reading things by Plato, Sophocles, etc, and then suddenly we're reading Václav Havel. I know that it's a big deal that he's at Columbia, etc...

But we're reading the History of the Peloponnesian War in the same week that we're reading plays written... oh... over 2000 years later? Continuity, much?

So I might get totally yelled at because technically, I'm not actually a student, but I just had a question for the class above me.

Columbia is like my DREAM college. I visited the campus this summer with my dad who went to Columbia for grad school and I was ready to move in right away. My GPA is fine and so are my recommendations/extracurriculars but my SAT scores weren't amazing.

Anyway, long story short. What are the lowest math and verbal scores you've heard of that got accepted?

83%, bitches & hoes!

i have never--okay, only once--been so proud of a B- (C+ depending on your scale).

the survey that came between the end of the exam and me finding out my score was so long that i was somehow sure i had failed by the end of it--if that makes any sense.

anyway, i was so excited to have passed (pathetic) that i felt the need to mention it somewhere (also pathetic) to people who might care (one never knows). how'd you do? if you did at all, that is. the due date was today...or yesterday, but they don't seem like they'll be terribly strict with that.

well, as you respond i'll be off reading the iliad...or watching cartoons.

I'm worried about the fact that there's no A/C in John Jay.
I mean...isn't it gonna be ungodly hot in that dorm?

Ok...this question is for those of you who live far away from campus.

I'm from the southernmost part of Alabama...and I'm trying to find a more efficient/cheap/easy way to get all of my stuff to Columbia than driving.

It's a twenty-two hour drive from here...and I'm not up for that...at all.

I was just wondering how you guys are handling that. :)

Just to check--our summer work is:
- first 6 books of the Iliad
- Frontiers of Science reading
- AlcoholEdu (pshhh)

Is that it?

This is going to sound stupid, but where exactly did it say that we had to read the Illiad over summer break? I've heard since early summer that we have to read some/all of it, so I'm not surprised, but I've never once been able to track down where it says how much we have to read (I presume all) and by when--or even that it's required summer reading at all, though I know it is.

I realize I'm going overboard with this phone service thing but the system in America is very different from what we do here in Hong Kong (hence me going crazy). Anyway.

Upperclassmen: what service did you use? any recommendations (which plans are best)?

Anyone: International calling. Is there anyway I can suspend my service during the 2 months in which I am not in America? I'd hate to pay $120 on a phone I won't be using.

What are you guys doing in terms of phones?

Sorry for the Question-Bomb.

I was just looking at cell phone plans and stuff and nearly choked when I read that a typical plan is $59.99/month?!?! Over here I pay $15/month on average ... err. anyone know anything about cheap cell phone plans? I'm a bit outraged by Verizon.

Dammit! I left the AlcoholEdu on pause for a while and then came back, finished the tiny bit of the lesson I had left--and then had the goddamn thing tell me that I had logged out (???) and that I'd have to start at the beginning of the stupid lesson! Which, might I add, I completed 98% before it told me I had logged out!

Piece of crap. This is so frustrating. I need a drink.
